  • Zimbabwe's primary international airports are Harare (HRE) and Victoria Falls (VFA).

  • Best regional access is from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Lusaka.
  • Aside from Air Zimbabwe, consider the following airlines:
    • From USA: Delta, Continental, Virgin Atlantic, Northwest
    • From Canada: Air Canada, Canadian Airlines
    • From Europe: British Airways, Lufthansa

Domestic hubs in Zimbabwe

  • Victoria Falls (VFA) is the primary safari hub offering access to the greater Victoria Falls and Livingstone area plus Hwange and Chobe in Botswana via the Kasangula/Kasane border post.

  • Kariba (KBA) is a secondary safari hub offering access into Matusadona and Mana Pools.  Kariba is accessible on Air Zimbabwe's scheduled domestic route.  Kariba also serves as an important hub for private charters into outlying safari camps.

  • Harare (HRE) is Zimbabwe's traditional domestic hub and whilst being off the main safari circuit is sometimes a necessary stopover

  • Hwange (HWN) is a very short flight from Victoria Falls - often done by a simple road transfer instead

Airlines in Zimbabwe

  • The national airline, Air Zimbabwe provides reasonably reliable scheduled services between Harare, Kariba, Hwange, Victoria Falls and Bulawayo.
  • Private air charter companies use Harare (International and Charles Prince), Kariba and Victoria Falls as hubs for chartering into the remoter safari camps.

Alternate travel options in Zimbabwe

Travel by road

  • Zimbabwe has an impressive road infrastructure by African standards particularly between the major centers and within the Eastern Highlands.
  • Self-drive trips using a car rental from Harare are readily available but relatively  expensive - best suited for exploring the east and south-east of the country.  Fuel shortages in the country since 1999 are a problem but with good planning are easily overcome.
  • Victoria Falls and Kariba are connected by a very poor dirt road within the country and the domestic airlink is recommended - there are two alternatives, drive on the Zambian side (6,5 hours, potholed tar) or take the Kariba/Milibizi Ferry (22 hours along lake Kariba).
  • Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls are served by a comfortable and reliable coach service.  Bus services in the rest of the country vary from dodgy to dangerous.

Rail options in Zimbabwe

  • The rail network is not extensive, serving Bulawayo and Victoria Falls best.
  • The rail safaris between the two towns are very successful.
